I think most classic rock musicians must've learned to play their instruments, or an instrument, while they were young. In their early teens, for the late bloomers, and younger if they were serious-serious musicians. They probably would have gained most of their facility before being introduced to alcohol or other drugs.

By then the apathy and lack of discipline from the drug and/or alcohol use wouldn't have mattered so much in terms of their playing. They could rehearse and write new material at a relatively sober part of their day. Then, whilst touring, the performance would serve for the daily "practice" sober musicians would normally engage in.

That's my theory anyway.
