I like the Al Swearengen character played by Ian McShane, and I think others do, because he speaks the way we would if we could. Though even he is circumspect at times. I say "character", though, because I suspect that the real Swearengen probably did not have the hidden streak of decency that Ian McShanes character reveals from time to time. The real life Swearengen's end, according to Wikipedia, is a might more ignoble than I would like to see the McShane character meet: "...Swearengen left town and was last seen as a penniless drunk, killed while trying to catch a ride on a train in Colorado."
